The photograph with the black background is of a necklace made by the husband wife team Arthur and Georgina Gaskin.  They were Jewelry Artists in the arts and crafts period.

After I got home from Artfest I got right to my studio.  I have made some important decisions about my art and my life. Artfest tends to put things into perspective for me.

The Shell necklace came about after visiting our local bead store The Garuda and I, in

Friday

Harbor

.  I bought 2 shells. They were 25cents apiece.  I just love the rocks stuck in the shell that I used.   So, I have a studio full of beads, embellishments and this little shell was what I needed to break my block.  I even have shells that I have found myself, but they didn’t push me to create like this center piece shell did.  I did draw from the Gaskin style of jewelry which is my absolute favorite designers, from one of the most interesting eras of jewelry design.

The pearl necklace is something I have had in mind to make for quite awhile.  I flattened the steel wire on the link of the chain.  I love the contrast of pearls and steel.

Leave a comment and say Hi.  Has Artfest inspired you to do art this week.  Let me know your blog and I will go and visit it.

Artfest

Img_5108 I was way too excited to sleep in on Thursday morning so I got up and drove done to the beach at Fort Worden..  This the beautiful sight that greeted me.

Last night I put this doll shrine in the gallery at Artfest.  I don't know if It was quite ready.  It didn't sell so maybe she isn't finished.  I may put her up on Etsy.  She is 120.00with the embellished box Img_5121_2 . Img_5127

The window view is from my dorm room. I love the trees at Fort Worden.  Did anyone else notice how loud those little song birds were in the morning.

Art Fest Cont

This is the art I made at Artfest.  Img_5212 Img_5214 Img_5215 Img_5227 Img_5229 The classes I took were This is me... which was a challange to take pictures of myself and make a journal celebrating me.  I alway hide when the camera comes out so this was a bit of change for me.

The hand thingy is an assemblage and the class was called Stacked.  I call this piece Betsy Johnson goes to Paris.  Anyone who is my age should know the designer Betsy Johnson, Her color use is bright and fun.  The bar that the funky tags, medallions and bird is hanging from is from a London Flea Market...hmm Knightsbridge I think.  I put it in my back pack and hauled it all over London.  When I got to the Tower of London my family breezed right through security but they stopped and searched me after seeing this weapon on the x-ray.  My sister was  almost rolling around on the ground laughing at me and the situation when I was try to explain what it was.  I decorated  a broken swinging arm lampbase and  the glass feet are part of a vintage cruet set. This class taught by the lovely Texan lady named Annie Lockhart it taught us how to use what we had laying around the house...you know the stuff...the stuff you keep thinking that someday you will find something to use it for.  Well it taught me well and I like what I made.

I also took a fantastic class from a man named Michael Jon Peterson.  It was a class called Spun Cotton Animals.  Well I loved it and can't for the life of me find my cute little girl that I made in the class.  I plan on making quite a few Christmas Ornaments for this years Holiday Marketplace.
This is a picture of Michael Jon.  Hopefully I found a new friendImg_5116

San Juan Island Studio Tour

I have exciting news.  I am going to be a guest artist in the 18th Annual San Juan Island Artists Studio Tour!  June 7&8 2008.  Matthew and Danielle Palmer have asked me to be a studio guest.  You can check out their art on my links.  It is an honor to be included with two artists I admire so much.

Loss of a Friend

Save0960 The Headlines of the local Newberg Graphic, in Newberg Oregon read Death on the Columbia River.  It was reported on KOMO,KING,and KIRO TV in Seattle. Before it hit the news, Curt Heuer's Fiance called us and told us Curt was gone.

Curt was my husbands class mate through high school, our neighbor for 14 years and had just bought property on San Juan Island after visiting  us and fishing and crabbing and loving these islands like so many have. As our neighbor he was always willing to lend a helping hand when Jim needed it.  All our boys were neighborhood friends, his older sons James and Chris were our older sons age and classmates  and his youngest son was a friend to our son Gabe.

Curtis loved these islands, he loved the sea and lived on the bountiful Seafood available when he was here working on his property.  One of his favorite things to do was go to Westcott Bay  when they had their U-Pick Oyster sale  and buy enough Oysters for 20 and cook them up over an open fire.   He also was part of the Knights of Columbus here on the island and cooked for some of their events as well . He laughed often and easily, was always enthusiastic about what he was making or doing.

Curtis died doing one of the things he loved to do most in life, crabbing.   Lost that day was also was Father James Nibler pastor of the Newberg's St. Peters Parish, and Father Jim's brother, Larry Nibler who owned Newberg Auto Electric.

He will be missed.

Art Fest Countdown

The Art Fest countdown has begun.  I finally came up with something to make for the gallery!  I won't post the finished art until after the event though... I like to keep it a secret.  This is a picture of my 4 X 4 page for the fat book.  I am going to be a part of 3 books this year.  These books are a collaboration of from 30 artists for the fabric fat book, to 60 pages in the paper version.  There is also an ATC Art fest book that about 30 artists are creating ATC's to be put into a book by Bee Shay of Nantucket. AtC are Artists Trading Cards...to the unfamiliar they are like art Baseball or Pokemon cards they measure 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 and are either copies or originals

A Super Island Day

Img_4696 This was the first nice weekend day this year!  My hubby and Roxie the wonder dog and I headed down to the beach.   It was cold on this beach but once we found shelter from the wind we were warm.

It is so nice for the days to be getting longer.  It sure lifts the sprit.

This picture is of American Camp National Park on San Juan Island, locals call this section South Beach. In the distance you can see (barely) Vancouver Island which is west of S.J. Island.  Thats our dog Roxie chasing a stick.

Img_4711 Our son is away in the Portland area visiting family so the only kid we have to take pictures of is our dog.

1000 Journals

Img_1685 This is a picture that was taken of me at a art journaling party at Fort Worden Port Townsend WA.  I am standing next to some guy!

Every year, the first weekend in April there is an amazing event called ART FEST.  It is held at Fort Worden and about 600 artists from around the world show up and take amazing, fresh, innovating art classes. These are not your grandmothers water color classes! I guess you would call it Alternative Art but after attending for the 5th year in 2008 the art seems the norm rather than the extreme.

In 2006 I was interviewed by Andrea Kreuzhage creator of the Art Film 1000 Journals.  I was so nervous I couldn't even get the token statement to come out right!  THIS IS AN EXPERIMENT AND YOU ARE PART OF IT.   My segment hit the editors floor...thank goodness!   I did have the wonderful opportunity to contribute  a page in one of the journal in 2006 and had the good fortunate to be at the right place at the right time and work in another one  at Art Fest in 2007.

The reason for adding this to my blog is that everyone who reads this should link to the 1000 journals blog and web sites.  It is a fabulous project all put together by Some Guy.
